Home prices are at historical highs, but recent data from realtor.com reveals the majority of engineering majors have the potential to own a home within 4 years of graduating.

In fact, of the 26 degrees that would allow a purchase in 4 years, 22 involve engineering with Petroleum Engineering offering the fastest route to homeownership in just 2.5 years. Other degrees that allow for a four year purchase include: Physician Assistant Studies, Dental Hygiene, Computer Science and Computer Science and Mathematics.

“When it comes to homeownership, degrees in engineering really pay off,” said Joe Kirchner, senior economist for realtor.com. “While this analysis leverages averages and assumptions, it shows just how powerful a high starting salary can be when it comes to early home ownership.”

Education degrees – such as Education and Secondary English Teacher Education – have the longest path to home ownership with an average of seven years. A degree in Early Childhood Education has the slowest outlook of 8.1 years.

“Our analysis also underscores the importance of consistently saving, especially if you aren’t making a high starting salary,” added Kirchner. “While 7 years may sound like a long time, putting away 20 percent each month could have education professionals in a home by their late twenties or early thirties.”

Realtor.com’s analysis measures how long it would take to save for 20 percent down payment on a $250,000 home, based on the average starting salary by degree as reported by Payscale.com and saving 20 percent of one’s income per year. The full list of 337 degrees is available upon request.
