Ditch the Social Media Links?

I just read an interesting article by Darin Persinger of Productivity Junkies about the use of social media icons on your real estate website. His argument is that by posting your social media links on your website’s home page, you’re encouraging people to leave your website, and go to your Facebook or Twitter sites, thus losing potential customers in the process.

Read his article here.

  1. Matt Cohen says:

I think he’s right on … if you have a brand like the ones he uses as examples – Apple, etc. If you are actually trying to have a conversation with website visitors, and you would like the forum for that to be a social network, then the social icons are a good thing. If they are on your site for something specific, they won’t leave because of the icon. If they are there to get to know you, hopefully after meeting you in the social context, they’ll be even more likely to come back. Again, if you have a top brand, or you are trying to get people to a site to perform one specific action, i.e. “visit the site and register for the event now!” you may not want any distractions. Otherwise, I would disagree with the author.
